The Destroyers came into existence in March 2009, the 4th Scottish league after Glasgow Roller Girls (GRG), Auld Reekie Roller Girls (ARRG) and Granite City Roller Girls (GCRG), although it took until September 2009 before a viable training venue could be secured: the McTaggart Sports Centre, Dundee (now sadly closed).
Although only able to train together as a team for 2 hours per week, the Dundee Destroyers took part in their first ever bout – in fact Scotland’s first ever roller derby tournament – the GCRG-hosted Highland Fling, in Aberdeen the weekend of 22-23 May 2010. After that the team went from strength to strength: finding the perfect training venue in the Dundee International Sports Complex (DISC), hosting their first home bout (Throw a Candy Shrimp on the Derby) against Aberdeen’s GCRG in September 2010 and winning their first away bout (Jamalot) against Perth’s Fair City Rollers in November 2010.
Due to various administrative issues it was sadly deemed necessary to dissolve the Dundee Destroyers at the start of 2011 but happily the Dundee Roller Girls were founded in their stead. Since January 2011 we have already hosted two home bouts (Fites of Spring, against Manchester Roller Derby in March & Spiderjam, against GRG’s Maiden Grrders in April) and our first away bout (G.I. Jam), a re-match against GCRG in July 2011.
We currently train 4 nights per week, and when not training or bouting the team act as enthusiastic support for the other Scottish teams, traveling around Scotland and the rest of the UK to show the derby love.
